What is telematics?

Telematics in a nut shell is: Production of services to the user by combining wireless communication, tracking and position information.

Lux Navalis can produce these services because it is a sophisticated position-database system combined with positioning and wireless communication. The positioning device is a gps-device (std or DGPS) and the wireless communication is performed either through the tcp/ip-network (internet) or in the form of text messages (GSM-SMS).
Either other Lux Navalis units or other telematics devices can form the service system.

Separate telematics devices are e.g. Benefon Esc! and different Track-devices, Garmin NavTalk and Nokia Communicator. Benefon Esc! and Track can communicate with Lux Navalis directly. Other devices need some further programming. The AIS-function, which has been in Lux Navalis for a long time, is a part of telematics devices.

What can I do with telematics?

With telematics you can communicate with positional information of the user. The most common way is to send the true position of the user to some other device.

  • You can request and receive the position of another unit. The other unit can be e.g. a car, a boat, a dog, or a person equipped with telematics device.

  • You can send messages connected to the position or action of the unit (e.g. the target has been checked or O.K. packet arrived, or move to tthe position sent to you).

  • Another unit can be set for continuous tracking.

  • Another unit can be set to send a message while arriving or departing a point (Lux Navalis Professional).

  • Own position can be sent to another unit

  • Route information and and waypoints can be sent and received.

  • Notes and the positions connected to them can be sent to other units.

  • Distress-messages can be sent and received
    (MOB-distress-button)

  • Usual SMS-messages can be sent and received.

In Lux Navalis Professional you can request positional information of the nearest or known

  • Safety devices,

  • notes,

  • ports,

  • and with additional programming own information of the user (also positional).

Lux Navalis Professional can also send and receive parameters of search patterns to and from the rescue organisation. It can also relay SMS-messages to other installations of Lux Navalis or Lux Navalis Professional by using tcp/ip-protocol.

Examples of the use of telematics:

The followin list gives an example of usage of telematics. Part of the applications are already in use.

Possible applications are e.g.:

  • Rescue operations and co´ordination of search

  • Tracking of sailing and other competitions where the competitors move in a wide area

  • Tracking of rented boats including water scooters

  • Delivery of driving advice to the summer house or to an anchor place.

  • Tracking of younger boaters

  • Guidance and tracking of boat squadrons

  • Logistics and tracking of deliveries including time-control of deliveries

  • Tracking of vehicles and persons on land and on seas. With these devices it is possible to track stolen property, too.

  • Positional SMS-services (e.g. the "Yellow pages", weather services, ornitological information, etc.). )

  • Tracking of vehicles and monitoring the condition of the cargo (e.g. temperature, pilge water level, etc.)

  • Tracking of hunting dogs and tracking and guiding hunting parties.

In Lux Navalis Professional you can also construct your own positional services.

Why is telematics extending?

The use of telematics is growing because it is possible to improve the efficiency of activities and thus gather saves. It is also esy to develop the operation principles. Quite often it is easy to calculate the benefits and costs:

  • Less fuel

  • Saved time and quicker action

  • Avoiding getting lost

  • Registration of actions becomes quicker, easier and more reliable

  • Increase in safety

Investing in telematics pays back quite soon
